Our story

Why we built Good Better Beta

Every writer knows the moment. The manuscript is done and now it's time for someone to actually read it. Nerves build. Sharing your work is scary.

But how should you share it? You've spent countless hours writing the darn thing. Your beta reading milestone should be a gorgeous celebration, not a formatting nightmare.

The messy email attachment

It started the way it starts for most writers: a manuscript finished late at night, and the question of who should read it first. So we did what everyone does, we attached a Word file to an email and hit send. Then a PDF, because someone couldn't open the Word file. Then an EPUB, because someone wanted it on their e-reader. We even printed physical copies and mailed them out because we were worried about control. Four formats, many email threads, and no idea whether anyone had actually made it passed the first paragraph.

Nobody's file looked right

Every format broke something and irritated our beta readers. The PDF was unreadable on a phone. The EPUB mangled the chapter breaks. The Word doc came back with tracked changes and a request to "send it as a different file, this one won't open." First impressions matter.

So we built the thing we wanted

Good Better Beta is our answer: upload your Word file once, and it becomes a satisfying web book. It's private by default and shared only with the people you invite. Your readers open a link and start reading on any device. There's nothing to download. Because writers are a nervous and peculiar bunch (us included), you can see exactly where in the story each beta reader is.

What we believe

Your manuscript is yours. There is no public catalogue here, no marketplace, no strangers stumbling onto your work. Just you, your story, and the people you trust enough to read it first.
